Welcome to Shore Lunch! I’m looking forward to blogging more about food — after all, everybody’s gotta eat, right? And more importantly, I find that food is a topic that epitomizes my Happy Humanist tendencies:
I feel so fortunate to have access to plenty of wholesome food … what a pleasure! It is so incredibly satisfying to raise your own foods. And even when that’s not possible, it is a total thrill to prepare your own meals from simple ingredients. That’s the “happy” part.
It’s a privilege to eat well, but with privilege comes responsibility. Maybe that sounds cliche, but I’m quite sincere about it. I believe it is my DUTY to carefully choose the foods I consume, giving consideration to such things as where and how it was grown, the working conditions of those employed in its production, how it was processed, and how far it traveled to get here. It’s hard to get excited about food that was doused in chemicals or that resulted in little financial reward for the workers who played a role in bringing the food to my table. THAT is the “humanist” part.
So anyway, welcome! Let’s talk food! Here’s a quick list of some of the food-related topics I’d like to explore at Shore Lunch:
